Importance of Sunglasses

The sun's ultra-violet (UV) rays trigger premature ageing of the eyes so cataracts and macular degeneration become an accelerated risk. This is made worse by the continuing depletion of the ozone layer in our atmosphere. Over-exposure to UV rays can cause "sunburn" to the eyes, where the surface tissues of the eye will literally peel off like skin sunburns.

Always invest in a decent pair of sunglasses and a hat to protect your eyes from the sun's UV. Wraparound frames are the best design for ultimate protection. As UV is an invisible light ray it is not the tint in your sunglasses that is protecting you, but the glass or plastic lenses in them. This means that even by wearing normal prescription glasses you are still affording your eyes some UV protection. Extra coatings are available to further enhance this protection.

Those with blue or light-coloured eyes are more likely to suffer from the effects of UV and all radiation as the coloured part of the eye (iris) acts as a filter. A simple analogy would be to compare the eye to a window where the iris is the curtain. Those with lighter eyes have thinner 'curtains' than those with darker eyes. As a result much more radiation penetrates through and these individuals will experience more sensitivity to light and relatively greater risk to the harmful effects of the sun.

Recently a new benefit has been discovered about sunglasses helping with jet lag after a long flight. The body's internal clock is affected by light and it seems that by wearing sunglasses on plane journeys, people can help their body clock adjust to new time zones.

Suitability

In order to find the correct type of sunglasses to fit your facial structure, follow this guide below.

Square Face:
Designer glasses with slightly curved frames really compliment square faces. Ideally the top of the frames should sit high up on your face.

Oval Face:
Most designer glasses suit oval faces provided that the size of the frame is in proportion with your face.

Oblong Face:
If you have an oblong face, go for designer glasses that cover as much of the middle of your face as possible.

Triangular Face:
People with triangular faces should look for designer glasses that have thin frames. If possible, avoid square shaped and large frames as well as strong colours.

Round Face
Designer glasses with straight lines really suit round faces. Dark coloured frames can also look very good on round faces.

Designer Sunglasses

Designer sunglasses are not just about keeping the sun out of your eyes, they are also about looking fashionable.

Owning to the broad range of styles available from the world's top designers, it's easy to find the right pair of sunglasses for the look you want. Furthermore, choosing to buy designer sunglasses does not mean that you have to compromise on quality. Designer sunglasses give the same level of protection as ordinary ones.

Like regular sunglasses, designer brands have UV protection and offer features such as polarized lenses. As a result, designer sunglasses are an ideal combination of chic and utility.
